The One Tree Planted T.R.E.E.S. School Program has expanded in exciting ways. When this program first came together, they wanted to be sure the program is relevant to students today, accessible to all, and provides hands-on opportunities for students to connect with nature. Thanks to Unified Caring Association’s (UCA) sponsorship, One Tree Planted was able to reach those goals this Earth Month through our Seed Germination Kit program!
This year (2021) for Earth Month, the Seed Germination Kit was available to grade school classrooms throughout the United States. Each kit included all of the materials needed for a student to plant their own tree — a reusable mini greenhouse, soil, perlite, seeds, and a student guide. Students were able to plant different seeds based on their location to grow local, native species, all while learning about the germination process and participating in it hands-on.
With over 6,000 participants, we know that this program made an impact through providing students with a hands-on opportunity to connect with nature. Additionally, students were able to connect with each other through a shared experience at a time when school was mostly online. We consider this to be a very successful program and have seen a significant spike in interest for 2022.
Going forward, One Tree Planted’s goal is to expand the T.R.E.E.S. School Program to reach more students and teachers, providing them with the same free opportunities to get involved and learn about nature from an early age. The free lesson plans, modules, see germination kits and activities set teachers up to include this in their classroom in a fun and easy way!
UCA and One Tree Planted have seen first-hand how providing students with an opportunity to connect with nature can help develop a stronger sense of self and connection with the world around them.
